Artists' Haven at Pilot Mound

The Studio and Grounds of Karl Unnasch

An early Spring view over Pilot Mound from the bluff above the Studio

In a sheltered nook of southeastern Minnesota, flanked by bluff and stream and sky and field, are nestled ten acres of Unabashed Utopian Vision. It is here, at a rural crossroads in the idyllic hamlet of Pilot Mound, that Artist Karl Unnasch has reanimated a long-dormant 1800s mercantile as his studio. Not twenty steps away, he is turning his century-old home into a one-of-a-kind installation.

When Karl first embarked upon this venture, he vowed to cultivate his new Haven, first and foremost, as a sanctuary for free thought. The doors are open in fellowship to all — but for fellow Artists in particular, “the Mound” has become a harbor for self-expression; an anchorage for conceptual abandon; a retreat for reflection, introspection, deliberation, rumination.

The Studio — a turn-of-last-century mercantile

Whether shouldering the austerities of the academic world or the hypocrisies of the urban art scene, visiting Artists will find solace and substance in this place of confluence. Owls will hoo from across the valley as someone clops past on horseback and stops in for a drink… or two or three. Distant coyotes yowl against a starry backdrop of campfire and bourbon. Tales are told; fantasy and reality blur together as superheroes and legends are discovered in the skins of neighbors. Here, urban culture is tempered by rural values and global perspectives are filtered through local dimensions, lending a whole new light to the stuff of one’s world.

Pilot Mound is Karl’s promise — to himself; to his philosophies; to his ideals. To his friends and Artist colleagues — that there will always be a place they can head when life is whispering that it’s time to re-center; to re-focus; to be re-inspired.

Drop in anytime. Come with a tranquil and open mind. Bring a smile. Bring a story. And don’t forget to bring some bourbon.
