An avid metal-caster over the course of multiple decades, Unnasch mastered a technique which allowed him to cast nearly anything, yet capture the finest detail without applying any burn-out method. Some of his castings are stand-alone works of art, while others have become the macro foundation for his vignettes or the micro elements of larger sculptures.
In addition to casting for his own art, Unnasch founded and directed the Standard Issue Iron Pour and Metalcasting Workshop in Southeastern Minnesota, a series which ran from 2006 to 2012. This event, held rurally at the farm on which Unnasch was raised, allowed sculptors a two-week retreat for uninterrupted mold making and iron casting.
